Congratulations to my longtime staff member and Chief of Staff, Kenneth Cutts, who was recognized by Capitol CNCT (“connect”) as a top 10 Chief of Staff for 2026! https://t.co/J52HdNmO9j https://t.co/GGK89vzc9X
I was glad to work with Democrats and Republicans to pass the funding bill covering Military Construction and Veterans Affairs for the upcoming, 2027, fiscal year. Quality of life is fundamental to military readiness, and this is a crucial investment in our installations, military families, and veterans. https://t.co/0Cv4OFZWta
Last week, I visited Blakely, Plains, and Albany to present those cities – and Early County – with ceremonial checks representing federal funds I secured in last year’s appropriations bills. In Blakely and Early County, the funds will be used to improve the city’s water/wastewater system and upgrade the county’s regional 911 emergency services equipment. In Plains, these funds will help renovate public buildings along SR-280, including paving and lighting of the parking lot for the recently constructed multipurpose community center. And in Albany, this federal investment will support neighborhood revitalization efforts, restore historic homes, and build new affordable workforce housing near Phoebe Putney hospital and the downtown area. Folks in these communities are working hard to grow and thrive. I will continue to fight for the federal programs that invest in and partner with Georgians as Congress works on appropriations for the upcoming fiscal year.
Today, the House Appropriations Committee considered the Fiscal Year 2027 Commerce, Justice, and Science funding bill. It has many shortcomings – from hurting businesses and jeopardizing public safety to making workers more vulnerable and undermining innovation. During the debate, I tried to improve the bill by supporting an amendment to restore funding to the Legal Services Corporation. From housing and domestic abuse to healthcare and other everyday concerns that sometimes require a lawyer, many people simply cannot afford representation. That is where Legal Services Corporation comes in. It helps our seniors, our veterans, and the most vulnerable through civil legal aid groups serving people in every district in every state. You can watch my opening remarks about the overall bill here: https://t.co/IyzkJvxBO4
This morning, I met with the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, along with my friend and colleague, Rep. Austin Scott (GA-08). I will continue to work hard, across the aisle, to make sure that Congress remains a reliable partner to Georgia’s cities and counties as they work to provide the infrastructure and quality of life that our families and small businesses rely on to grow and thrive.
I was saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and former colleague, former Georgia State Representative, John White. My wife, Vivian, and I offer our deepest sympathies to John’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. Words cannot fully convey the magnitude of this loss, but may the memory of his warmth, his courage as a barrier-breaker, and his extraordinary devotion to public service bring you comfort. We are better because of him. You can view my full statement here: https://t.co/8pGq4FA7ne
Congressman Bishop (GA-02) issued the following statement after the passing of humanitarian and entrepreneur, Ted Turner https://t.co/7ypFZpQ9PY
The price of freedom is truly eternal vigilance. Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision is the latest in a line of decisions which has decimated the Voting Rights Act and left it a shell of the landmark legislative achievement of the Civil Rights Movement. This decision ignores our country’s history of racism and reopens the door to Jim Crow era, undemocratic tactics that suppressed and denied power to minority voters and communities. Thank goodness for the swift action of law enforcement at last night’s shooting outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Their heroism protected the President, Vice President, the many elected leaders, journalists, and their families as well as hotel guests, workers, and visitors. I am glad that no one was seriously injured, according to news reports. Unfortunately, we have seen a surge of political violence and this cannot be condoned. I am praying for everyone's safety and hope that we can come together, across political affiliations, to stand firm in our democracy and make our country safer for all.
This week, the new federal funding bill for agriculture, rural development and the FDA was introduced and briefly debated, as the ranking member of the subcommittee, I raised my concerns and hope that they can be addressed as we negotiate further on this bill. It is hard to make America healthy again when this bill takes fruit and vegetables from over 5 million women, infants, and children and eliminates the Healthy Food Financing Initiative. When ag producers and rural communities are struggling with skyrocketing costs over the past year, this bill is cutting staff and programs on which they rely at the Farm Service Agency, Rural Development and NRCS. This bill makes it harder for rural communities to have clean water and affordable utilities, and it unfortunately retreats from investment in our rural businesses. Lastly, the majority is offering caustic riders that simply take the focus away from agriculture and the real challenges we face. Rural America needs help now more than ever and I hope that we can improve this bill as the appropriations process continues.
