We lost a giant of the civil rights and labor movement today. Dolores Huerta dedicated her life to fighting for a better future for workers, immigrants, women, and communities whose voices were too often ignored. Her work helped farmworkers secure rights and protections that millions benefit from today and changed the course of our nation. Dolores will be deeply missed, but her legacy and relentless pursuit of dignity and justice for all will always live on. May she rest in eternal peace.

I am deeply saddened to hear of a detainee death at Otay Mesa Detention Center this weekend. My prayers are with their loved ones. We need answers about what happened, which is why I have requested an immediate briefing from the Trump Administration. This is not an isolated occurrence. The death rate for people in ICE custody has more than doubled from the first Trump Administration, bringing it to its highest point in more than ten years. The Administration is responsible for the health and safety of the people it detains. These appalling numbers make it clear that ICE is not doing enough to protect the immigrants in its custody. Not only are families being torn apart as a result of ICE’s failures, people are losing their lives. We need transparency now.

The spike in ICE enforcement near schools in San Diego isn't making us safer. It's just terrorizing our students and communities. I led the San Diego Congressional delegation and Senators Padilla and Schiff in calling on DHS to put an end to this, and it was an honor to have Senator Schiff in San Diego last week to make it clear: ICE enforcement doesn't belong anywhere near our schools. Parents shouldn’t have to fear dropping their kids off at school and students shouldn’t feel fear attending classes. Full stop.
