My heart is with the Searsmont community as officials respond to a reported mass casualty incident at Robbins Lumber. Details are still limited. Please follow updates from local authorities, avoid the area, and keep those impacted and the first responders in your thoughts.
.@VP's remarks today were nothing more than a clumsy attempt to distract from the disastrous policies of this Administration. At a time when Mainers are being crushed by rising costs and surging gas prices—thanks to an illegal war he’s now suddenly defending—he barely touched on this very real economic anxiety. Instead, he used his platform to amplify baseless right-wing conspiracies, spread blatant disinformation about Maine’s immigrant communities, and threaten to defund critical health care programs that are literal lifelines for thousands of Mainers.
HOW IT STARTED: "On day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again, to bring down the prices of all goods.” — Donald Trump, August 2024 HOW IT’S GOING: Inflation just hit a three-year high, thanks to Trump’s illegal war in Iran—the kind of war he promised never to start (another lie).
RT @RepCDMenefee: Last week, when I visited Dilley with @chelliepingree, we witnessed horrific conditions firsthand. I’m grateful Olivia i…
Let's be clear about how we got here: Trump started an illegal war with Iran, and Maine families are now paying over $4.50 a gallon because of it. That's an extra $1,500 a year out of the pockets of the average Maine household. This crisis was entirely preventable. If pausing the 18-cent-per-gallon federal gas tax can provide even modest relief to families getting squeezed at the pump, we should absolutely do it. That's why Democrats have been calling for a gas tax pause for weeks. While the White House was telling reporters the idea was "not currently under consideration," Democrats were already writing the bill. I'm glad the President has finally caught up. But pausing the gas tax will not clean up the mess he made. The real solution is ending the war that sent gas prices soaring in the first place.
Late last night, Olivia Andre returned home to Maine. After six long months locked away in Dilley in violation of federal law, she is finally reunited with her family, friends, and a community that welcomes her with open arms. We fought like hell to make this happen. And we will continue to fight until every child, every family, every person is released and the Dilley Trailer Prison is shutdown for good.
Thanks to @JoaquinCastrotx for bringing us down to Dilley to meet with our constituents being held there. We saw the conditions. We heard the lies. We listened to stories of fear, uncertainty, and heartbreak. Those stories will stay with us. And we will keep fighting to bring our neighbors home.
Senate Republicans just released their Homeland Security budget for the next reconciliation bill. Not only does it include more than $34 BILLION in additional funding for ICE and CPB; it also sets aside $1 billion for… …wait for it… TRUMP’S BALLROOM! This is absolute insanity.
The Kennedy Center’s decision to fire 35 people—in clear violation of their union contracts—is totally outrageous, alarmingly shortsighted, and needlessly cruel to these dedicated employees and their families. https://t.co/LU3n4hv9ha
Last week, the @EnergyCommerce committee held a hearing on my and @RepNewhouse's bipartisan, bicameral Food Date Labeling Act, which would make food expiration labels less confusing and standardize how companies phrase date labels. This commonsense change would help dramatically reduce food waste while saving families money and keeping perfectly good food out of landfills. Thanks to @RepKimSchrier for speaking in support of my bill and to the committee for help moving it forward!
