We just ended the Democrat-led Department of Homeland Security shutdown. This funding bill fully restores funding, stability, and pay for the majority of critical operations including TSA, FEMA, Secret Service, Coast Guard, and CISA – and it does so without any policy restrictions at the center of Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats’ radical agenda. While the far-left hoped to eradicate U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement resources, complete funding for those agencies is advancing concurrently. This two-pronged approach restores DHS immediately and makes it clear: enforcement will not be stripped. Having Democrats diminish Article I and force the use of reconciliation was not my preferred path. Yet, this is the reality before us. My support of today’s action is for all the frontline personnel who would have – once again – been subjected to missed paychecks starting this weekend. I’d rather carry the weight of an imperfect move forward than ask them to carry the real-life burden of Democrat failure. Trying to unilaterally dictate which national security functions survive while holding key operations and employees hostage during the longest government shutdown in history is not a record I would be proud of – but it’s one Democrats hold. I thoroughly regret the erosion of the appropriations process Senate Democrats have instigated, and the consequences that were paid by everyday Americans. It is not a standard I accept – and my votes and position throughout this process have made that clear, each and every time.
Oklahoma ranks 1st in the nation in the production of rye, 3rd in the production of wheat, 5th in the production of cattle, pecans and grain sorghum, 10th in peanuts, and 12th in watermelon. It is clear: Oklahoma’s farmers, ranchers, producers, and growers are essential to not only our state, but to our entire country. In return, as the representative for over 13,000 farms and ranches in my district alone, I will always fight to ensure they are not neglected in Congress. Today, in passing the Farm Bill, we did just that.
My thoughts and prayers are with the President, my colleagues, and everyone who was put in danger at the White House Corespondents dinner tonight. Thank you to the Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift and brave action. Political violence is never acceptable.
Great meeting with @SecretaryBurgum yesterday. He is doing important work managing our beloved national parks and conserving our public land to keep them healthy and productive for future generations. Additionally, his agency plays a critical role in upholding the government's Tribal trust and treaty responsibility - work that is of the utmost importance to me personally as an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. Thank you, Secretary Doug Burgum!
On April 19, 1995, the worst act of domestic terrorism in our nation’s history took place at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Today marked thirty-one years since that tragic and miserable day. However, even though the time has passed, as Oklahomans, the Oklahoma City bombing will forever be imprinted in our minds and hearts. Today, we first remember and grieve the 168 innocent lives that were cut short on that dark day. I will never forget the heartbreak, grief, and distress I felt as I witnessed mothers, fathers, children, and friends watch their loved ones be brutally taken from them. I will also never forget the way Oklahoma responded to such a tragedy. After being rattled and thrown onto the world stage without any warning, we could have panicked. Yet, we didn’t. Instead, our state responded strongly, quickly, and empathetically. To this day, I can truly say this is one of the many reasons I am proud to be an Oklahoman. So, on the 31st anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing, let us take the time to mourn the lives that were prematurely taken, grieve with those who lost a loved one that day, and thank our first responders and governing officials who responded with courage. We must ensure they are not forgotten.
Truly a hero!
Tune in at 1:30 pm ET/ 12:30 pm CT!
I am hopeful for a full recovery for Pauls Valley Principal Kirk Moore who was injured today but is now in stable condition. My thoughts are also with the students, teachers, faculty, and their loved ones as they recover from the emotional trauma of today’s unthinkable tragedy. I want to thank our selfless law enforcement and first responders for taking swift action. As this situation continues to develop, I am praying for everyone involved, for Oklahoma, and for America.
Happy Easter to you and your family!
Is our border secure? Are our airports safe? Will hardworking personnel receive their paychecks? Can Secret Service plan for the security of upcoming national events? Do Americans have confidence that their government is doing its job to protect the country? Last night, I voted to answer those questions with certainty.
